On June 22, 2025, the Hezena Lemaletian Foundation (HLF), led by Senator Hezena Lemaletian, launched a one-day anti-GBV and anti-femicide campaign in Baragoi, Samburu North, in partnership with the Office of the President. The initiative responds to rising cases of gender-based violence driven by insecurity, harmful cultural practices, and entrenched patriarchy.
The campaign brought together key government officials, security agencies, community leaders, and local administrators to address root causes such as FGM, early forced marriage, and sexual exploitation. Its goal is to create a safer environment where women and girls can live free from violence.
HLF’s approach focuses on three pillars: community sensitization through dialogue and legal awareness; survivor support via a temporary help desk offering psychosocial aid, legal guidance, and referrals (including the 1195 helpline); and capacity building for chiefs, paralegals, and community health volunteers to improve reporting and case handling.
Sen. Lemaletian emphasized that protecting women’s dignity is a measure of national justice, noting that femicide reflects deep inequality that must be dismantled. The campaign also aims to improve GBV data collection in remote areas and strengthen the justice process.
This Samburu North initiative supports the government’s commitment to end GBV by 2026 and is expected to serve as a model for similar interventions across Kenya’s ASAL regions.
